What is Ludus Roman Checkers?

Ludus Roman Checkers, also known as "the game of soldiers," is an ancient Roman board game that has its origins in the 1st century AD. It's believed to have roots in the Greek game Petteia and even older games from ancient Egypt. This classic military tactical game was a favorite among Roman legionnaires and has been featured in tournaments throughout history. The objective is to capture the enemy's king or as many of their checkers as possible.

How to Play Ludus Roman Checkers

1. Starting the Game: The player with the red checkers goes first.
2. Game Objective: The goal is to capture the opponent's king or destroy the most of their checkers.
3. Movement: All pieces, including the king, move horizontally or vertically on any number of squares, similar to a rook in chess. They cannot jump over their own or other players' checkers and cannot move diagonally.
4. Capturing: Pieces are captured by pincerizing two enemy pieces on your turn. You can capture two or even three opponent's pieces in one move. Captured pieces are removed from the board.
5. King's Movement: The king can move between two standing opponent's pieces safely, but if it cannot move in any direction, it is considered captured.
6. End of Game: The game ends when one player has only one king left, making it impossible to capture, or if the position is repeated three times.
