What is Tute?

Tute is a captivating trick-taking card game that belongs to the Ace-Ten family. It has its roots in Italy, where it was known as Tutti. By the 19th century, the game had made its way to Spain, where it became a favorite pastime. Tute is played with a 40-card deck, using either traditional Spanish or Italian playing cards, commonly referred to as naipes.

How to Play Tute

In Tute, each player receives eight cards. The game begins with the non-dealer leading the first trick with any card. The next player must play a card of the same suit if possible, or a trump card if void in the led suit. If no trump cards are available, the player can play any other card. The trick is won by the highest trump card, or if no trumps are played, by the highest card of the led suit.

The winner of the trick takes the first card from the stock, while the loser takes the second. The trick winner then leads the next trick, and the process repeats. A player or pair who wins at least one trick gains the ability to declare card combinations to earn additional round points. The player who collects all four Kings can declare "tute (all)," ending the round with victory. If a player holds both the King and Knight of the trump suit, they can declare "las cuarenta (forty)," scoring 40 round points. A combination of King and Knight from any other suit is known as "veinte (twenty)," adding 20 round points to the player's score.
